c.1940 Wolverine, 4pc. Glass Washing Machine Set in Original Box
Classic four piece pressed steel glass washing machine set by Wolverine. Include crank wound manual washer, crank wound wringer, washtub, free standing clothes line, and six wooden clothes pins. Set has never been used and is complete with original box. An outstanding example of a bygone era the individual pieces are described as the following. Glass Washing Machine (10" tall, 4" diameter) - consists of a thick walled, 12-sided pressed glass jar with permanently attached enameled steel three legged base and screw on dome cap. The cap holds a rotating piston-type, nickel plated double plunger. The plunger assembly connects to a side crank with walnut stained wooden handle. The plungers can be set into any position by adjusting the wooden ball at the top of the dome. Turning the crank causes the plungers to simultaneously move up and down while rotating. The Wolverine name inside a large diamond logo was pressed into the glass on the underside of the container. Wringer Assembly (7" long x 4" tall) - clamp on unit which uses a support bracket that attaches to a groove located around the top of the glass container just below the dome. The wringer uses a steel rod which fits into the bracket and can be turned in any direction. It uses a steel rod crank with wooden handle to squeeze clothing between two solid rubber wringers. Wash tub 2¾" tall. 5¼" diameter base. 6½" diameter at the top. - solder sealed tub with embossed lines and rolled metal edges. Red exterior, white interior. Free standing clothes dryer 9½" tall, 5¼" base - consists of enameled pressed steel embossed base with solid wooden dowel in the center. Steel "flower-petal" clip at the top holds four steel rods which spread out to stretch cord. The cord is original. The six, 2½" long wooden clothes pins are original to the toy. One panel of the original box was printed with a simple illustration of the entire set. Manufacturer name and address were also included. The opposite side panel includes directions for repositioning the wringer. The top flaps still have an original Christmas sticker with a pen written notation "To Kathleen from Santa Claus".
